Letters from Brazil V “Let the Good Times Roll” is a return to the series treating Professor Mike Gaherty and his research and adventures in Brazil. Now in 1985 Mike is in Brazil working for James Hansen of the International Section of the “New York Times.” Mike’s task is to research and report on Brazil in 1985 in the post dictatorship era, including President Elect Tancredo Neves and the “Accidental President José Sarney.” He does this in part with new reporting on “cordel” and the Northeastern Market in Rio de Janeiro. Along with renewing old friendships and research contacts, Mike spends time in Fortaleza and Canindé in Ceará State, at the “Missa do Vaqueiro” celebration in Pernambuco, and new travels in São Paulo and then Porto Alegre with the renowned Luis Fernando Verissimo. New and a surprise are two awards, the first at the Brazilian Academy of Letters and then a modest award in Lencois Paulista in the interior of Sao Paulo State. The latter takes place with Mike his wife Molly and is followed by a whirlwind tourist trip to Salvador, Manaus and Rio de Janeiro.
An additional thread in the book is Mike’s dealings with no less than four Brazilian women, a hiatus from marriage back home.
